Cilin II

Cilin II-A book by Edgar Whitcomb

Cilin II is Ed Whitcomb’s latest book about his very late in life solo sailing trip around the world in a 30 ft boat. Ed  has lived a most remarkable life of public service and adventure. Swimming the mouth of Manila Bay after escaping from the Japanese for the second time only to be captured again is the subject of an earlier book.  In this book, the trials and problems, some life threatening, and his ability to forge ahead made this an interesting read.  In 1995, while attempting to sail solo around the world, his ship hit a reef in the Gulf of Suez and sank.He was rescued and returned to the United States. Cilin II is a book about an adventurer being tested by nature and his will to not only survive but to succeed.  As Ed writes, “When I reached Tahiti, a new problem arose. There were coral reefs along the shore but my sea chart did not show a passage that I could feel safe with.”

The experience can be epitomized in the following poem used by the author in Cilin II:

On an ancient wall in China
Where a brooding Buddha blinks
Deeply graven is the message-
It is later than you think.
The Clock of time is wound but once and no
man has the power,
To tell just when the hand will stop
At late or early hour.
Now is all the time you own?
The Past a golden link,
Go cruising now my brother
It is later than you think.
You will not be able to put it down once you start to read.
